Every Spring at Upstream, we celebrate Read Across America Week in a BIG way! Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2 (also Mrs. Allen’s) always falls during this time so we make it a school wide Seuss-tastical party for two weeks! We invite parent and grandparent readers to read Seuss books (we have 100s), teachers do a Seuss inspired door decorating contest, each day is a student dress up day based on a Seuss book, and our amazing families volunteer to bring Seuss type snacks for the kids to enjoy!
This is truly one of the most fun times of year at our school! Wacky Wednesday and Dress Like a Pet are crowd favorites! Costume awards are given daily! But, the very most magical thing that happens is all of the extra reading, read aloud books, guest readers, audio Seuss books, and book focused instruction that saturates our school! After all, in the words of the man himself, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” That was, of course, Dr Seuss in his wonderful book I Can Read with My Eyes Shut!
